On this archipelago, which is geographically part of the Makaronese, has preserved a scientifically outstanding natural heritage, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The "Levadas" are water courses around the mountains that were built by humans at the beginning of colonization to transport water to the inaccessible fields. Nowadays they are one of the biggest attractions for tourism in Madeira.
